The casting I didn't get last year sent me to the shoot I'll remember forever.

Because the agency sent me somewhere else that week instead. And that shoot led to a relationship with a photographer who has changed how I see my own work.

Before: research the brand or photographer. Know what kind of work they do. Dress in a way that's relevant without trying too hard.

During: be yourself, they already know what you look like from your card. What they're casting is your energy.

After: follow up professionally if you have a direct contact. Then let it go.

How to build a portfolio that actually opens doors.

Start with test shoots, find photographers who are also building their books. You both benefit.

Aim for variety: headshots, full body, editorial, lifestyle. Show range.
Quality over quantity. Ten strong images beat fifty average ones every time.

Update it every six months, the portfolio that got you your first job should not be the one you use two years later.

Mondays in this industry feel different to Mondays in most jobs.

No guaranteed income. No fixed schedule. No 'see you at 9am' reliability.

That used to terrify me. Now I think of it as the most honest arrangement there is.

You show up fully or you don't get the work. There's no coasting. No hiding in a role that doesn't require you.

This work requires all of you. I've decided that's the best part, not the hardest.
